2025 Season Rule Updates & Game-Day Expectations
At MSI, we want every game to be played in the spirit of respect, fairness, and fun. As the new season begins, please take a moment to review the latest rule updates and reminders that will guide players, coaches, referees, and families.
Since 1971, MSI has connected youth to life lessons, growth, and each other through soccer. These rule updates help us create a safe, respectful, and developmental environment for all.
Game-Day Preparation
- Coaches should always introduce themselves to referees before the match.
- Confirm the length of halves and provide multiple game balls.
- Ask referees about any points of emphasis—especially the new 8-Second Rule for goalkeepers.
Only the Captain Rule
Some leagues now limit which players can speak with referees. Only the team captain may approach the referee. MSI will provide captain armbands for Travel teams. While not used in every league or tournament, be prepared to follow this if enforced.
8-Second Rule for Goalkeepers
Goalkeepers now have 8 seconds to release the ball once in control. The referee will raise an arm when 5 seconds remain. If not released in time, a corner kick is awarded to the opponent.
Interval Communication
Coaches may not speak with referees at halftime or between periods unless invited. Parents should never address referees before, during, or after matches.
Referee Respect Policy
MSI fully supports U.S. Soccer’s “Respect the Call” initiative. Harassment or abuse of referees—physical or verbal—will result in stricter penalties. Respect keeps the game safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Penalty Kick Double-Touch
If a kicker accidentally touches the ball twice during a penalty (or with the non-kicking leg immediately after), the penalty must be retaken if scored. If missed, it is recorded as a miss.
Drop Ball Updates
- Drop balls inside the penalty area go to the defending goalkeeper.
- Opponents must stay 4 meters (4.5 yards) away.
- The ball is in play once it touches the ground.
Off-Field Ball Touches
If a coach, substitute, or team official unintentionally touches a ball that’s leaving the field, play restarts with an
indirect free kick—no automatic card. (Intentional interference still results in disciplinary action.)
Please also keep players and bags five yards off the sideline.
Only the Captain Rule
Some leagues now limit which players can speak with referees. Only the team captain may approach the referee. MSI will provide captain armbands for Travel teams. While not used in every league or tournament, be prepared to follow this if enforced.
