Referee Expectations on Game Day

  • Referees will check all team rosters on game cards for Classic games
  • Either team may present a roster by phone, QR code, or printed game card
  • If a player’s number and photo do not match, that player cannot play
  • Teams have until half-time to produce a game card, otherwise they forfeit the score of the game
  • Late players must check in with the referee at half-time
  • If the referee does not have a smartphone, they can use the coach’s phone or a printed game card to check in players and record scores. The QR code can be scanned later to finalize details
  • Referees are encouraged to enter scores and infractions (yellow/red cards) via their phone after scanning the QR code
Two MSI youth players battle for the ball during a Classic League game on a turf field, with families watching from the sideline in Montgomery County, MD.
  • Each team should have a Team Sportsmanship Liaison (TSL). Referees will meet with TSLs and team captains at the coin toss and should ask to speak with a TSL anytime they feel uncomfortable with spectator comments

Weather, Referees, and Game Issues

MSI will post an announcement on the website for any weather-related issues and field status. If refs are late or don’t show, please review each other’s rosters. If teams are able, find an assistant /parent (from each team) that is willing to referee half of the game. Each team should plan to referee half a game, or if you need until a referee shows up.

Please phone the MSI emergency phone hotline to let us know of any referee no-shows. Dial: 301-762-4674 then press 5. Please email us on Monday if you did not have a ref or did not have a full quota of referees (for U13+) at your game.
